Meet the Trainer – Eric Clark

Eric Clark is a Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Specialist at TPMG Strive Fitness and Performance in Williamsburg. He specializes in weight loss, conditioning, sport-specific training/athletic development and more. We recently caught up with Eric to learn more about his approach to fitness and training.

How or why did you get started in the fitness/wellness industry?

I’ve always been involved with fitness because of my love for sports.  I’ve played sports for as long as I can remember and the more I advanced, the more I became interested in the body and how to make it stronger in order to compete at a higher level; while also making it functional for comfortable everyday living.

What’s your training philosophy?

If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you! This is easily taken out of context, so I think it’s important to note that while you do need to challenge yourself, you must pay attention to your body and its limits. Find a balance of challenging yourself while remaining fair and reasonable to your body.

What makes you different from other professionals in the field?

My type of experience with what I’m teaching. My knowledge of both the sports and rehabilitation worlds has allowed me to approach exercise programming in a unique and specific way. There aren’t many people who specialize in muscle building, mechanic/form correcting, and injury prevention all in one, and I feel I incorporate each of those elements into my programming.

I also believe there are elements that can be interchanged and swapped between all populations; and finding those elements, as well as areas that are neglected, is something I enjoy.

What is your favorite exercise and why?

Anything related to strengthening the core is what I love. Almost everything we do functionally involves the core in some way. A strong core can advance and elevate performance, as well as improve everyday quality of life tremendously, so strengthening it is essential and should be a primary goal in my opinion.

One piece of free advice you give to someone?

Strive for progress not perfection! Remain patient and fair with yourself to allow adequate time to progress, while knowing the limits of your body and how far it can be pushed.

The key is always about finding balance in your workouts, diet, and life in general for maximal results.
