Elise K. McLawhorn, FNP-C, is a certified family nurse practitioner at Tidewater Family Medicine in Hampton. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Radford University and, following her undergraduate degree, received her Master of Science with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialization from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Elise is certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
Starting at a young age, she always had compassion for helping others—this compassion made for a career in medicine to be an easy choice. Elise enjoys practicing family medicine for the ability to treat multiple generations within a family and build long-lasting relationships for years to come. She sees a range of patients from young children, adolescents, and adults. She is dedicated to making a difference in her patients’ lives and believes education on the prevention of chronic illnesses is a critical aspect of preventative medicine.
As a family nurse practitioner, Elise treats an array of chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and women’s health concerns. In addition to chronic conditions, she provides acute care visits and preventative health visits, such as physicals. She has a passion for women’s health, including well-woman exams, breast cancer screening awareness, and cervical cancer screening.
Elise believes the cornerstone of quality health care begins with open communication and shared decision making, allowing her to better care for the patient as a whole.
Elise has a special interest in disease prevention and finds educating her patients on ways to prevent and help their chronic conditions to be very rewarding. Along with diet, exercise, and staying on top of their medications, Elise also stresses the importance of routine screening exams. This allows her patients to be more in tune with their bodies and knowing when to seek medical attention when something is off.
Having grown up in the Hampton Roads area, Elise finds joy in being able to care for those in her community. She appreciates all of the activities available in the area, such as local farmer’s markets, boating, fishing, and visiting the Virginia Living Museum.
Outside of the office, she loves spending time with her husband and children. She also enjoys running and being outdoors to experience all that nature has to offer. Elise welcomes new patients to call the office and schedule an appointment with her.
