Orthopedics Physician Assistant
J. Ryan Hamilton, PA-C, earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Following his undergraduate education, he attended Charleston Southern University in South Carolina, where he received his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Ryan is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). He is also a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Ryan joins TPMG Orthopedics in Newport News.
Growing up in Colorado among teachers and farmers, Ryan became the first medical provider in his family. Early on, he desired a career where he could directly impact people around him. In college, Ryan volunteered as a Spanish medical interpreter, phlebotomist, and diabetes care technician. After seeing people meet their health goals, having increased energy and fewer health-related limitations, he knew that he belonged in the medical field.
As a certified physician assistant, Ryan believes in the principle, cura personalis, or “care for the entire person.” He emphasizes that health problems can affect not only a person’s physical health but mental and emotional health. Untreated health issues can worsen, resulting in limitations to people’s daily lives. With a patient-centered approach to healthcare, Ryan listens to patient questions and concerns, and works with Dr. Shane McGowan to develop a treatment plan that best suits their lifestyle needs.
At TPMG Orthopedics, Ryan assists Dr. McGowan in treating patients of all ages for common spinal conditions such as neck and back pain, lumbar spinal stenosis, adult and pediatric spinal deformity, and radiculopathy. He also assists with open and minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, decompression, and spinal fusion techniques. Ryan’s special interests include correcting spinal deformities and treating arm and leg pain/numbness resulting from spinal cord compression.
Ryan loves outdoor activities offered by the Hampton Roads area – kayaking, fishing, and boating. He also enjoys the many hiking and mountain bike trails. Ryan is motivated to treat patients so they can experience these physical activities as well.
