J. V. (Ian) Nixon, MD, FACC, FAHA, FACSM is a cardiovascular specialist with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of complex cardiovascular disease. He joined TPMG in 2017, opening the Cardiovascular Diagnostics Center in the New Town area of Williamsburg.
Dr. Nixon earned his medical degree from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and completed his residency at Worcester City Hospital in Massachusetts. He completed a fellowship in Cardiology at Harvard Medical School Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and a post-doctoral fellowship in Cardiology at Southwestern Medical Center/University of Texas Health Science Center.
Throughout his accomplished career, Dr. Nixon has held a number of academic appointments at the University of Texas Health Science Center Southwestern Medical School and most recently at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine as a tenured professor of Internal Medicine, an appointment he has held since 1986. He was the former director of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Noninvasive Cardiology Services.
Dr. Nixon has served as a research adviser to medical, post-doctoral and graduate students for over 40 years, and he is consistently invited to lecture at universities and conferences worldwide on advancements in Cardiology and related topics.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Nixon has published extensively in well-known medical journals. He also serves on the editorial board and as an editorial consultant of many prominent medical journals such as the American Journal of Cardiology, American and European Heart Journals, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography.
In recognition of his accomplishments and considerable contribution to not only the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, but the medical community at large, Dr. Nixon received the prestigious honor of Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine/Cardiology in 2017.
Dr. Nixon is a fellow of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, American College of Sports Medicine, and the Council on Geriatric Cardiology, among others.
