BIOGRAPHY

Family Physician in Newport News, VA

Kent E. Willyard, MD, FAAFP, received his undergraduate degree in computer science from East Tennessee State University in 1987. Following graduation, he worked for ROLM, a subsidiary of IBM Corporation, selling and supporting telecommunications systems. He found medicine to be his true calling as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and left the corporate world behind for medical school in 1994.

Dr. Willyard received his Doctor of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1998. He completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at Riverside Regional Medical Center in 2001 and joined TPMG later that year.

Dr. Willyard is board certified in Family Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, an Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He regularly serves as a volunteer clinical preceptor for first- and second-year medical students. He is a past-president of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians and remains active in leadership and advocacy efforts at the state and national level. Dr. Willyard is a strong believer in the Family Physicians’ Creed.

I am a family physician

one of many across this country.

This is what I believe:
You, the patient
are my first professional responsibility
whether man, woman or child
ill or well

seeking care, healing or knowledge.

You and your family deserve
high quality, affordable health care
including treatment, prevention

and health promotion.

I support access to health care for all.

The specialty of family medicine
trains me to care for the whole person
physically and emotionally, throughout life
working with your medical history and family dynamics

coordinating your care with other physicians when necessary.

This is my promise to you.
