Kerry Bate, OT, CHT is a board certified Occupational Therapist specializing in hand and upper extremity therapy. Kerry has over 20 years of clinical experience in the field of occupational therapy and is a certified hand therapist. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and her Master of Occupational Therapy from New York University in New York. She has maintained certifications in Occupational Therapy through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and Hand Therapy through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC).

The daughter of a New York City firefighter and a nurse, a career in public health was a natural fit for Kerry. Her first exposure to occupational therapy came as an undergraduate working in a clinical setting, assisting a hand therapist. Kerry was moved by the extent to which even a seemingly minor injury to a patient’s hand could have a debilitating impact on their life. This experience sparked her initial interest in the field of hand therapy and allowed her the unique ability to utilize creative problem-solving skills to target an affected area and see the noticeable impact therapy can have on quality of life.

As a result of her extensive clinical experience, Kerry has found that no two cases are alike and recognizes the importance of a tailored approach. Even the most common hand injuries she has treated hundreds of times present differently in each patient. With this in mind, she understands how critical clear communication and patient education are to delivering high levels of patient success and satisfaction.  She enjoys meeting patients from all walks of life and finds gratification in helping them recover from injury.

As a certified hand therapist, Kerry’s skills include evaluation, manual treatment, activity modification and ergonomics, therapeutic exercise prescription, application of Physical Agent Modalities (PAMs), and splinting. Kerry loves to work with motivated and engaged patients, no matter how simple or complex the injury. Her treatment style includes educating patients and discussing what she can do to improve their condition, while enlisting their full participation in the process.

Outside of clinical practice, Kerry’s primary professional interest is promoting higher-level clinical practice among her peers while continuing her own professional growth and development. She was a guest teacher and lab practical examiner at Long Island University’s Department of Occupational Therapy in Brooklyn, New York where she spent a considerable time teaching and mentoring students and young therapists towards the most thoughtful and meaningful ways to provide patient therapy and care. With a partner, Kerry is developing a formal continuing education program for hand therapists aimed at improving standards of treatment at all levels of a therapist’s experience.

In her free time, Kerry enjoys reading, traveling, and engaging in various sporting events. She moved to Virginia from New York in 2019 and looks forward to the opportunity to explore the rich history and numerous outdoor activities the Hampton Roads area has to offer. Kerry joined TPMG Physical Therapy in Newport News and Williamsburg in July 2019.
