Ruth H. Innes, MD, is a graduate of the University of Virginia and completed her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. An avid traveler throughout her life, Dr. Innes’ clinical rotations took her from the boroughs of New York City to Newport News, Virginia. Settling in the Tidewater area, she completed her family medicine residency training at Riverside Family Practice in 2003 and began practicing at TPMG Hampton Family Medicine the same year.
Board certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Innes strives to offer high quality care to all patients, as well as dignity and compassion for those at the end of their lives. She views each patient as an individual, taking into consideration how the body and mind work together to help patients overcome illness and the importance of a patient’s support system.
Since 2008, Dr. Innes has been practicing hospital medicine at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia and currently serves as the Director of the TPMG MIH Hospitalist Division. In making the move to full-time hospital-based medicine, Dr. Innes gained a new perspective on preventative healthcare and how impactful this approach can be on a patient’s health, especially for coordination of care following an acute illness.
Dr. Innes credits palliative care as an extremely important aspect of her practice and knows that while all illnesses cannot be cured, as a physician, she can always ease the pain, suffering and emotional anguish often experienced by patients with terminal or end-stage illness. While these discussions are often challenging and emotional, Dr. Innes is grateful for the opportunity to help her patients and their families through these difficult and stressful periods.
Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, she and her family immigrated to the United States when she was in grade school. Throughout her childhood, her family’s adventures took them across the United States, from the coast of Oregon to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
Dr. Innes is married to Dr. Paul Hiotellis, also a family physician with TPMG, and together they have two sons. Outside of her medical practice, Dr. Innes enjoys time with her family, horseback riding, traveling and playing tennis.
