Spine Surgeon in Newport News and Williamsburg, VA
Shane McGowan, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery. Dr. McGowan and the TPMG spine team focus on the treatment and management of both surgical and non-surgical conditions of the spine. Dr. McGowan joined TPMG Orthopedics in Newport News and Williamsburg in 2019.
After observing a spine surgery during his undergraduate education at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, Dr. McGowan decided to pursue a career in medicine and earned his medical degree from Stony Brook University in New York. He then completed his residency at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and an orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center/Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, recognized as one of the top spine fellowship programs in the country.
Dr. McGowan specializes in surgery and treatment of common conditions of the spine including neck and back pain, cervical spinal stenosis, lumbar spinal stenosis, thoracic/lumbar spondylolisthesis, spinal tumors, metastatic tumors, adult and pediatric spinal deformity, radiculopathy (commonly referred to as a pinched nerve), myelopathy (compression of the spinal cord), and flat back syndrome. In his surgical practice, Dr. McGowan utilizes various techniques including open and minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, decompression, and spinal fusion, among others. His special interests are the correction of spinal deformities and treating arm and leg pain/numbness resulting from compression of the spinal cord.
When possible, Dr. McGowan prefers to avoid surgery and provide treatment and care through a team-based approach; collaborating with his orthopedic partners and physical therapists to return patients to health and function. In the event surgery is the best course of treatment, Dr. McGowan seeks to reduce surgical pain and improve recovery time.
The son of a New York City fireman, Dr. McGowan saw firsthand how the rigors of physically demanding work could affect the health of public safety workers and those in similar professions. Inspired by his father’s experience with physicians and surgeons, Dr. McGowan sought to dedicate his life to restoring physical health to hardworking public safety workers and the communities they serve.
Dr. McGowan is a member of the North American Spine Society, AOSpine, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and was recognized as a “Top Doctor” in orthopedics for the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania in 2018.
Dr. McGowan is also a three-time recipient of the Hero Award from St. Luke’s University Health Network for outstanding contribution to life-saving treatment in severe trauma cases.
Outside of the office, Dr. McGowan is an avid boater, fisherman, hiker, and sports and physical training enthusiast. A former college baseball player, Dr. McGowan is always looking for a chance to get back on the field. He chose the Hampton Roads area to build his practice for the family-friendly environment, rich history, and close connection to the water.
