Sophia A. Daniels, MS, CNM, joined the United States Navy and graduated with Honors and Distinction from United States Navy Hospital Corpsman “A” School. She was also her class Valedictorian. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. After serving in the military for eight years, Sophia decided to pursue her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialized track in Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner/Certified Nurse Midwife.
From a young age, Sophia was inspired to pursue a career in obstetric care. Coupled with her love for critical thinking and the fast-paced environment of medicine, she began volunteering as an EMT-B during her teenage years. Although she was never able to assist with a birth during her volunteering experience, she still knew that labor and delivery was the right track for her.
Sophia originally expected to follow a women’s health nurse practitioner route until she met a passionate midwife during her first nursing job. She taught Sophia how to respect the laboring woman and help her in whatever way is most comfortable to her birthing experience. After assisting her first birth, Sophia knew that pursuing a career as a midwife was what she was meant to do.
Between her military background and time as a staff registered nurse, Sophia gained extensive experience in both family medicine and labor and delivery. She has extensive experience in both routine and complicated pregnancies, birth control and safe sex education, natural family planning, STI treatment, nursing care, and postpartum care. Well woman exams are her special medical interest and she feels rewarded after easing her patients fear if it’s their first time receiving an exam.
She thoroughly enjoys the continuity of care as a midwife. Sophia finds it gratifying to bond with someone throughout their pregnancy and then being a part of their birthing journey.
Sophia is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives and a member of Tau Chapter in Sigma Theta Tau International.
She enjoys living in the Hampton Roads area for its variety of activities for her family including the Norfolk Zoo, Virginia Aquarium, and amusement parks. When not at the office, Sophia spends her free time at an ice rink watching her son play hockey. She warmly welcomes new patients to call TPMG Obstetrics and Gynecology in Newport News to schedule an appointment with her.
