Orthopedic Surgeon in Newport News and Williamsburg

Stephen H. Cummings, MD, FAAOS, is fellowship trained in Joint Replacement Surgery from the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Florida.  He earned his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from Grove City College in Pennsylvania and his Doctor of Medicine from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois.  Dr. Cummings completed his residency program at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at North Shore Long Island Jewish (now Northwell) Health System in New York.  He joined TPMG Orthopedics in September 2014.

Dr. Cummings specializes in conditions of the hip, knee, and shoulder.  He performs knee replacement surgery, including total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, Makoplasty partial knee resurfacing and Oxford partial knee replacements.   He also performs anterior approach hip replacement (sometimes referred to as the “Jiffy Hip”), which is a minimally invasive muscle sparing method and has been proven to decrease recovery time after hip replacement surgery.

Dr. Cummings' practice includes treatment of degenerative shoulders including patients with shoulder arthritis as well as chronic rotator cuff disease requiring anatomic or reverse shoulder replacement surgery.  His specialty training includes the treatment of painful, failed or infected joint replacements.   His practice also includes treatment of painful joints, swollen knee treatment, treatment for knee pain, treatment for hip pain, fractures, and arthritis.

Dr. Cummings is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). He has been continually recognized as one of Hampton Roads’ best orthopedic surgeons as selected by his peers throughout the area. He also enjoys working with the editorial board of the prestigious Journal of Arthroplasty reviewing cutting edge hip and knee research prior to publication.

In addition to caring for patients in TPMG Orthopedics offices located in Newport News and the New Town area of Williamsburg, Dr. Cummings has clinical privileges and performs surgeries at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Cummings enjoys a friendly game of pick-up basketball, downhill skiing and spending time with his wife Jen, a York County native, and their two children.
