BIOGRAPHY

Midwife in Newport News, VA

Susan M. Coxson MSN, ARNP, CNM earned her Associate of Science in Nursing from Advent Health University’s College of Nursing in Orlando, Florida. She then completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Jacksonville University’s College of Nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. Furthering her education, Susan earned her Master of Science from the Nurse-Midwifery program at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio. Susan is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner.

Ever since she was a child, Susan developed a passion for helping others and enjoyed the field of medicine. Susan has worked as a labor and delivery registered nurse for over 20 years in both high and low-risk labor and delivery units and most recently became a certified nurse midwife. Serving as a Navy Corpsman for 10 years, Susan fell in love with the midwifery care model and continued on to medical school.

As a provider, she feels it is important to listen to her patients and find ways to involve them in the health care process. By better understanding their concerns and health care goals, she can provide customized support for each of her patients. Providing compassionate, education-centered care is vital to her practice and she strives to empower expectant parents to make informed choices in a safe, judgement-free space. Susan is a strong supporter of women’s health promotion. She also believes continuity of care allows her to strengthen the midwife-client relationship which creates opportunities for informed choice discussions and increased trust which are critical to help them achieve a birthing experience that aligns with their birth plan.

Susan treats patients in their teens through menopause for a variety of women’s health issues including mental health, contraception, routine gynecological care, pregnancy care across the continuum, infertility care, and preconception planning. She also has a special medical interest in physiological birth and has trained with the spinning babies methods and other beneficial labor tools.

As a member of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), Susan stays up to date on the latest training and practices in her field. Susan also values teaching and enjoys the opportunity to share knowledge with future generations of nursing students. For the past six years she has served as faculty instructor for registered nursing students in both a classroom and clinical environment.

As a previous resident of Hampton Roads, Susan recently moved back to the area with her husband of over 20 years who served in the military. She enjoys being back in the military community, the proximity of the beach, and the culture surrounding the Hampton Roads community. When she isn’t seeing patients, Susan loves to hike, play with her dogs, spend time with family, and watch her daughter play soccer. TPMG Obstetrics and Gynecology warmly welcomed Susan to the practice in 2021.
