Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack healthy parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). This causes damage to occur anywhere in the body from the mouth to the colon. Symptoms include fatigue, mouth ulcers, bowel obstruction, diarrhea, and pain in the abdomen.
“Crohn’s disease can be quite debilitating. Severe symptoms make it difficult to perform daily activities because you don’t know when or where Crohn’s will attack the body. When it does, you must act quickly,” said Williamsburg gastroenterologist, Frances J. Jones, MD, FACG. “The goal of this treatment trial is to investigate medications that will help alleviate symptoms in patients and heal the damage to the gastrointestinal tract, ultimately delivering improved health and normalcy.”
The investigational treatment trial team will evaluate potential patients for candidacy with an interview, questionnaires, labs, and a colonoscopy. Eligible patients will be enrolled in a one year treatment trial. The evaluation and treatment are free of charge. Participants will also be compensated for their time.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Diagnosed with moderate or severely active Crohn’s Disease for at least three months
- Previously responded to conventional therapies
